Studying Medicine / MBBS in Australia

Medicine study in Australia is offered in the form of undergraduate or postgraduate course. The undergraduate program is classified as the Bachelor of Medicine or Bachelor of Surgery depending on the course you go for. On the other hand, the postgraduate or equivalent program is categorized as the Doctor of Medicine. There are some universities in Australia that only offer undergraduate programs or post graduate programs whereas other universities offer both undergraduate and post graduate programs. There are also some medical schools that offer medicine courses for graduates as well as the school leaver.

There are various models of medicine education in Australia. Different medical schools across the country offer different duration of the degrees ranging from 4 to 6 years. Usually, the MBBS programs last from 5 to 6 years and, as the name suggests, admit matriculates of secondary school. Here, applicants are usually selected by observing the combination of high school leaving certificate performance, UMAT score (medical degree entrance test) and interview. Similarly, if we talk about graduate programs, they last typically 4 years. Here applicants are tested with the help of aptitude tests, interviews, and previous academic degree. The most widely used selection test for this purpose is GAMSAT (Medical entrance exam).
